SEPTIC SYSTEMS

For the last several years the Town has been mandating its citizens to renew

the condition of their septic systems to safeguard our environment.

This has a direct effect upon the quality of the water of Bark Lake and therefore it's village stream.

With the co-operation of our citizens, Barkmere has enviable water quality.

The Town is enforcing the provincial regulations concerning the pumping of septic tanks.

The main purpose of pumping a septic tank is not to empty it of liquid.

Periodic removal of the sludge and solids (which builds up in the tank) enhances the proper functioning of the tank and the system.

If you are planning a new septic installation or modifying your existing installation,

a Certificate of Authorization is required.  The information required includes a location and

site plan referencing any new or existing buildings and watercourses.

Specifications of the of tank are also required.

The Town Building Inspector will have a checklist outlining the information required.

You must pump your tank every 2 years if you are a permanent resident and every 4 years if you are a seasonal resident.

If you are doing renovations or repairs, please consider installing quart-a-flush toilets,

low-flow showerheads or any of the other water-conservation devices that are on today’s market.

As always we ask you to use phosphate-free soaps and other environmentally safe products.

Please contact the Building Inspector at (819)-687-3373 #1
